Prejudice and Racism

We celebrate the differences, but they don’t make anyone better than anyone else. BTW – This poster depicts several stereotypes, but it is not racist.
We celebrate the differences, but they don’t make anyone better than anyone else. BTW – This poster depicts several stereotypes, but it is not racist.

In 2009, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder called Americans “a nation of cowards,” saying that we avoid talking about race. I disagree with his accusations but agree that we don’t discuss the subject enough. We don’t speak about it because many times we falsely accuse each other of racism. There are too many misunderstandings and no one wants a bad reputation. Some may call me a racist - or a hater of overweight people after reading this article, but I am nothing of the sort.

Andrea Tantaros, someone with great ideas.
Andrea Tantaros, someone with great ideas.

Andrea Tantaros explained it better than anyone recently, by saying that many people today confuse racism with prejudice. They are not the same, and I agree. We all prejudge (ideas, history, politicians, politics, people, etc.), but most of us are not racists. For example, someone can be fearful of an individual walking down the street (an emotional reaction to their physical appearance, but this is not racism, sexism, or anti-semitism, or any of those) and at the same time not hate them for who they are. Fear is created by past events in a person's life, such as being mugged, picked on by ONE person we unintentionally classify as belonging to a group. This is a self-preservation mechanism - uncontrolled and emotional, but hate is pre-meditated and is a mind-set.

 What about me?
What about me?

As I’ve said before, I was picked on by a heavy-set Caucasian fellow in high school. For many years I felt uneasy and angry around overweight people, any color, any race. However, I dealt with it and I don’t feel bad about this anymore. One can understand that when someone who looks different bothers us, a prejudice sets in. If a similar situation occurs concerning racial differences, a person can become fearful or develop a distrust for those who look like the one who caused the anxiety.

What if it’s the kid on the right? Why not, are you prejudiced?
What if it’s the kid on the right? Why not, are you prejudiced?

It doesn’t mean the skeptical person is a racist. If you resemble someone (white, black, Hispanic, Asian, bald, skinny, heavy, dressed the same, wearing a similar cap, etc.) who caused someone else some pain, you may hear a car door lock as you walk by. Don’t take offense. It may be prejudice, or simply mean that the driver realized his doors were not locked and decided to lock them as you walked by. Hey, they might not be a racist, but reacting to some past, bad experience.

Saying ‘Chicago’ and ‘golf’ may be racist, #1.

Saying ‘Chicago’ and ‘golf’ may be racist, #2.

Some pundits on TV have said that when we use the word, “Chicago,” we are racist because there are a lot of blacks in Chicago. If we say that President Obama plays too many rounds of golf it proves we are racist. This is seen by the paranoids as linking the president to Tiger Woods and sex. Sorry, but that’s not reality, it’s just crazy. Check out more paranoia here: Search for the text, ‘If you,’ and you’ll see it.

Saying that President Obama plays golf isn’t racist, it’s the truth.
Saying that President Obama plays golf isn’t racist, it’s the truth.

Let’s not let ultra-sensitivity get the better of us. Americans generally celebrate the differences and believe that if we were all the same we’d be bored. Yes, there’s real racism out there, but let’s keep in mind that there’s a difference between prejudice (pre-judging), and racism (hating someone for their appearance or heritage). Why have we not had the conversation on race that President Obama and Eric Holder spoke about many years ago? Like most of us I am not afraid of discussing this, Mr. Attorney General, are you?

Stephen Dinan, A Pundit in Reporters’ Clothing

Written : Sep. 18, 2013

Regardless of your political affiliation, please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

Stephen Dinan, appearing on Washington Journal, Sep. 16, 2013.
Stephen Dinan, appearing on Washington Journal, Sep. 16, 2013.

I once thought the Washington Times tilted right, but no more. If pundit Stephen Dinan is a good sample, The Times is now left-wing. I don’t begrudge anyone’s right to be a liberal. However, someone who professes to be a reporter (not pundits Chris Matthews or Sean Hannity) should remain politically detached. Mr. Dinan appeared on Washington Journal this past Monday, and, as Mr. Spock said, I could hardly believe my ears! Mr. Dinan is in no way objective. He spouted many of the left’s talking points while speaking with host Greta Brawner.

The left doesn’t want you to know about the Republican ideas on health care.
The left doesn’t want you to know about the Republican ideas on health care.

Here are Mr. Dinan’s Democratic talking points, as discussed on the Journal: 1. The Republicans have no health care plan of their own to replace Obamacare. This is palpably false. All Stephen Dinan had to do was perform a little research. Here are some URLs I found quite easily on Google. If I spent more time, I’m sure I could have presented dozens here, but these are only a sample:

1. Headlines on the GOP solution.

2. Four pages on the GOP solution.

3. Article detailing the GOP solution.

4. Paul Ryan proposes solution.

5. Roadmap for America.

So, for my liberal friends out there, please don’t say that Republicans have nothing to offer. Instead, why not be honest, and say that you don’t like any of them? I'd buy that. But don’t accept the lie fed to you by the media and say there are none.

2. Stephen Dinan stated Republican failures, but never those of Democrats. This is childish, doesn’t discuss the issue, and falls flat. 3. He called the Republicans, “crazy” (name-calling) for trying to pass a bill funding and another defunding Obamacare. Dumb, maybe, but not ‘crazy.’ 4. Mr. Dinan made a big deal over the government shutdown. My liberal friends would agree with him (this is, after all, a list of liberal talking points). And I’m not saying this to argue, I merely object to this guy’s bias while at the same time passing himself off as a non-partisan reporter.

5. Mr. Dinan kept saying that the economy is getting better. True, but as the president has repeated, not fast enough. 6. Republicans and Democrats strategize to blame each other for various decisions, he said. I hope not, but this is something many on the left love to stress. 7. Dinan points out that there are many “big tests” coming for Republican Speaker John Boehner. Okay, but never did Dinan say anything about the president being tested. 8. He questioned Boehner’s leadership and said we need to keep an eye on it during debt limit talks and upcoming immigration debates. He never mentioned the president’s leadership.

Boring! I agree with the reporter.
Boring! I agree with the reporter.

9. Mr. Dinan used the phrase “Republican stagnation” and called Republicans, 10. “tricky.” 11. A caller pointed out that Dinan mentioned how much spending we’re doing. In defense of President Obama, as many on the left do, the caller, solving nothing, told us about how much Presidents Bush and Reagan spent. While not nearly as much as the current president, Dinan agreed with the caller, in principle. I guess if Bush did it, then overboard, outlandish spending is defendable for Obama. Remember the kid on the playground, “He did it first. So there.” 12. Stephen Dinan used the left’s argument on spending which goes like this: “It’s gotten worse in the last 10-12 years. Perhaps, but it’s gotten much worse in the last 5.

Give up the silliness. There are Republican solutions.
Give up the silliness. There are Republican solutions.

13. Dinan defended recent government cutbacks on spending without praising Republicans, who have been for this for years. Typical of some on the left. 14. He knocked Speaker Boehner’s statement that the American people are ready for a serious conversation on spending. Dinan said that the people want their Social Security, Health Care, education and FBI spending instead. But, friends, the Republicans don’t want to cut those areas. Don’t be misled by such pundits hiding in reporters’ clothing!

A biased media reduces freedoms.
A biased media reduces freedoms.

15. Dinan mentioned at least twice that the Republicans would “hold the government hostage.” Regardless of whether you believe this or not, it is a talking point of the left. 16. He said that Republicans have made their questioning in Congressional hearings regarding Benghazi, more political by trying to tie it back to the White House. I disagree, of course, but a defender of the president would/should agree with Mr. Dinan. 17. He actually said that Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) made a great point by saying that only 5% of Americans agree that entire government spending should be held hostage. That may be true, but the Republicans want to fund the entire government while holding back funding for Obamacare. Schumer also asked, “How far Republicans will go without being blamed?” I’m sure most liberals agree, but a reporter shouldn’t argue for any side.

Always watch for bias in the news, and point it out. When we have a one-sided, opinionated media, and we nearly do, freedoms easily dissolve and the country is doomed.

The Syrian Deception – Look Over Here and Pay No Attention to the Lack of Jobs or the Scandals

Written : Sep. 11, 2013

Regardless of your political affiliation, please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

We found WMDs? Let’s react differently this time.
We found WMDs? Let’s react differently this time.

I admit that I supported the war in Iraq due to Saddam Hussein’s horrific use of chemical weapons against his own people. These were called, “weapons of mass destruction,” or WMD. Many on the left now ask, “Why not now?” Sometime around 2010 I realized that with the poor condition of the American economy, we could not afford another conflict. The vastly radicalized Middle East, public opinion, the lack of progress in Iraq - and the left - all convinced me that our best interest lay in staying out of it. Peace, man. Many said that the people in Iraq didn’t learn anything from our presence and insisted that we were not the world’s police force.

Axis of WMD. Can’t read it? Google ‘Axis of WMD’
Axis of WMD. Can’t read it? Google ‘Axis of WMD’

Our Nobel Peace Prize winning president now wants to lob a few missiles Syria’s way because Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons against his own people. The question I ask is, “Why now?” What caused the change of heart, and how is it even possible when the left protested so vehemently against “Bush’s War?” President Obama promises the strike will be small, swift, won’t bog us down for years in a new conflict (how do we know that?), but will teach Syria a lesson. What will Syrian President al-Assad learn that the radicals in Iraq didn’t?

Were you convinced that the U.S. should use military force against Syria?
Were you convinced that the U.S. should use military force against Syria?

”What kind of a world will we live in if the United States of America sees a dictator brazenly violate international law with poison gas, and we choose to look the other way?” No, that’s not President George W. Bush justifying the war in Iraq, it’s a quote from President Barack Obama’s Sep. 10, 2013 speech! President Obama addressed the nation and tried to convince us that his choice to strike Syria is the right one. In the next breath he urged Congress to delay voting their support for his decision. Isn’t this lack of direction (or is it misdirection?) stunning? President Kennedy (D-MA) once said that a few advisors in Vietnam would be all we’d need. President Johnson (D-TX) escalated that war (which, by the way, took a Republican president to end it). After so many said we would not get involved in global conflicts, how can we believe the current president?

Now and Later.
Now and Later.

President Obama said a year ago that if Syrian’s president used chemical weapons against his own people it would cross “a red line.” He doesn’t want to appear weak by doing nothing, but I maintain that he does not wish to strike Syria at all. I think he wants to distract Americans from the poor economy (lack of jobs). He’d like you to not pay attention to the myriad of scandals - his administration’s failure to protect our people in Benghazi, the IRS’ targeting of conservatives, and the massive data collection – the ‘spying on Americans’ discussion.

It’s possible that Assad used WMD…
It’s possible that al-Assad used WMD…

While the magician waves one hand, you don’t notice that something else is happening in the other. So, take your eye off the lack of jobs, the massive over-printing of money, and the second Obama administration’s incompetence. Look at Syria, instead. Ignore the significance of the 12th anniversary of 9/11, the glory of the new World Trade Center Tower, and for heaven’s sake, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!

The Liberty Amendments by Mark Levin, Part II

Written : Aug. 28, Sep. 6, 2013

Regardless of your political affiliation, please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

Continued from last week’s post.

They call him ‘The Great One.’ There’s a reason.
They call him ‘The Great One.’ There’s a reason.

Left-wing radicals would have you believe that Constitutionalist and talk show host Mark Levin is a radical. He’s nothing of the sort. An author of five books (an intellectual and thinker), he believes that the U.S. is in “an age of post-constitutional tyranny.” Levin believes that the public is not being informed, but misled by its leaders. This is why he is gaining ground with so many.

 Levin on radio.
Levin on radio.

Mark Levin calls the U.S. Department of Energy the Department of No Energy because items that produce vast amounts of real energy (oil, coal, nuclear) are generally diminished and opposed by the Obama Administration. The things that don’t produce much energy - if any - are touted as great (wind turbines, solar, and bio-fuels such as algae). An administration such as this is for “no energy.” Even open-minded Democrats and environmentalists can understand the irony and appreciate the humor.

 Ameritopia, by Mark Levin.
Ameritopia, by Mark Levin.

”The system is broken because we’re unmoored from the Constitution,” he said, on Hannity, on August 16, 2013. (Yes, on Hannity! The other networks won’t let him communicate his ideas to you.) Levin cites the imploding and yet expanding federal government (think about that for a minute), and an out-of-control national debt, with unfunded liabilities now approaching $90 trillion – only a few years ago just under $70 trillion. “The notion of limited government was all swept away with a big exclamation mark with Obamacare and so many laws before it.”

Will you make wise-cracks, or take notice and consider these ideas?
Will you make wise-cracks, or take notice and consider these ideas?

Don’t take my word for it, Read Cal Thomas’ assessment of Levin’s new book.

Just so you don’t say I ignore the other side, or get my news from only one source, you’re free to read some criticism of Levin by Ana Marie Cox, who writes about “politics and whatever” (not my words) at The Guardian. Her outrage, when confronted with new ideas is entangled with the usual paranoia, closed-mindedness, and name-calling, as she says his objectives are to “disempower anyone” who disagrees with him. [In my travels From the Left to the Right, I found out that this is a fallacy in left-wing thinking; no one on the right is out to oppress anyone!] Levin never uses race in his arguments, but Cox sure does, and without much intellectual grounding, I might add. She drips with sarcasm and ridicule, without using any substantive arguments against his, as she calls them, “zombie ideas.” Ana Marie Cox, like many, won’t ever seriously consider Levin’s concepts. What would you expect from a mostly-brainwashed populous, thoughtfulness?

The Unmaking of America.
The Unmaking of America.

No, I am not a Constitutional scholar – and this is not a book review. However, I like Mark Levin’s ideas for amending the Constitution. According to lawyer and author David Limbaugh (not Rush, but his brother), Levin attempts to revitalize, not destroy the Constitution. His idea to limit the terms of Supreme Court Justices makes sense. So does the call for a national convention to amend the Constitution.

Here’s David Limbaugh’s recent article on Levin’s Amendments.

Who can argue with Mark Levin when he states that America is no longer a federal, constitutional, or representative republic, and points out that our crushing out-of-control debt is so high, and says that the past and current presidents have threatened to rule by executive order? He says we are being manipulated by Washington. No kidding! He asks, referring mainly to Obamacare, “How the hell can you have a representative republic and an informed republic, with the manner in which they’re passing these massive bills?” Good question.

Check out the Terrence P. Jeffrey Interview of Levin at CNS News
