President Obama and his You Didn’t Build That Speech

Written : July 29, 2012

In the fall of 2011, Elizabeth Warren said, “There is nobody in this country who got rich on his own.” President Obama agrees. In his July 13, 2012 speech at Roanoke, VA, he presented his true ideology. The famous quote is, “If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” Conservatives immediately recognized this as a knock on entrepreneurs and nodded as this confirmed their belief that the president doesn’t like business people. Whoa! He and his supporters said we took his remarks out of context. As President Bill Clinton once argued about the meaning of the word, “is,” President Obama is arguing about the meaning of the word “that.”

Conservatives laugh because we know what he meant, but if we listen hard enough, liberals twist his words into a slightly different version. According to the left, the president said that they didn’t build society’s infrastructure, which government crafts for all, including business people, to use. But, if he meant that they didn’t build roads and bridges, trains and trestles, don’t we then say, “no kidding?” It’s obvious, so, what’s the point? President Obama’s been saying we need teachers, road builders, and brick layers. Again, “no kidding,” and, ”so what?” I think President Obama meant (and said) that business owners don’t own their own success; they owe much of it to all of us, the taxpayers. It reveals his lack of experience in the real world, and a huge misunderstanding about the risks entrepreneurs take. Thanks to the old left, our bosses owe us a comfortable workplace, respect for our humanity, and a competitive wage, or salary – but, that’s all. How out of touch he seems when it comes to free enterprise and how it works, but that’s just me.

I should be fair. Let’s take the quotes in context. Mr. Obama said, “If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. [Insert famous quote here.] Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges… Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.” I’m tempted to say, “no kidding,” again, but he implied this: Since the guy who created his business thrived, everything it’s built on contributed to its success. While self-evident, this argument falls on its face when you consider that the failed business people used the very same infrastructure, the same school system, the same public transportation. So did criminals, and the poor. Did the roads and bridges and all of that make them fail?

The president points out that we succeed when we work together. His illustration is that we can’t all have our own fire departments, our own Internet, our own bridges. Of course, that’s right, but we don’t want to do everything together, either. We have our own enterprises, whether that’s working for someone or working for ourselves in our own businesses.

President Obama said, “You’re not on your own, we’re in this together.” This is the centralized federal bureaucracy, red tape, big government view, and I disagree with it. We are not alone in life, but the struggle toward our own success is an individual one. I hope we all succeed.

I tried, but could not find a single article supporting President Obama’s meaning for “You didn’t build that.” Perhaps you can.

President Obama’s Smashed Hopes, Broken Dreams, and Broken Promises (Part II)

Written : July 16-17 and 24, 2012

President Obama promised to eliminate earmarks and go “line by line” in every bill to eliminate them. Meanwhile, he remained aloof and detached from all legislation. He told us that here would be no lobbyists in his administration and said, “They will not fund my party; they will not run our White House...” But just look at how his failed stimulus favored Obama campaign donors like Solyndra, regardless of the wisdom of such special favors.

This president said he’d return the White House to the people, but instead instructed his staff to play its Secret Service security, ‘loosey-goosey,’ so the Salahi’s, who didn’t appear on his guest list – or anyone else - could enter the White House unquestioned. He said he wouldn’t take money from PACs, then turned around and did it.

Obama supporters insist that Mitt Romney bear the responsibility for what happened after he left Bain Capital in 1999. Yet, the president (who refused to release his college transcripts for some reason) and his Attorney General, Eric Holder, find hiding behind executive privilege acceptable, and refuse to turn over thousands of requested documents to Congress. The mainstream media and their allies take the president and Mr. Holder at their word when they claimed that neither one of them knew anything about the disastrous and failed gun-running program, Fast and Furious – in which the U.S. government sold guns to the Mexican cartels. (How many liberals have told me they hated when Reagan armed Saddam Hussein? Yet, F+F is okay with them – because this president gets a pass on everything.) Their response is eerily similar to responses they themselves give regarding moral questions - and right and wrong. They say that President Bush did the very same thing under a similar program (but here are the differences between F+F and Operation Wide Receiver:

1. No one died under WR.
2. WR traced those guns, F+F did not.
3. WR = 300 guns, F+F = 2,000 guns, and lost 1,400 of them.
4. WR shut down in 2007 after it was unveiled as a failure by President Bush’s admin., F+F shut down under President Obama – but only after pressure from Congress and after hundreds of Mexicans and one U.S. Border patrol agent died).

President Obama’s speech on July 16 contained his most disappointing statement to date. He said, “…If you built a business – you didn’t build that.” He suggested that business people didn’t succeed alone! They relied on the Internet, road builders, teachers who taught them in grade school, and public transportation systems. In other words, they owe their success to government programs. This is not only foolish and insulting, but it’s also a socialist idea: Ask me how I know. Let me pose a question. To paraphrase Red Eye’s Greg Gutfeld, “If government claims the credit for entrepreneurs’ successes because they used roads, doesn’t it bear the blame for every evil act committed by all the criminals who used the very same roads?

We Americans succeed because we innovate and start businesses when government is non-intrusive and refrains from imposing punishing taxes upon them. These companies flourish when a comfortable climate exists for the people who run them and for their investors. Hopefully the people will throw out this radical president and replace him with one who understands successful people. Perhaps then, we can get back to work, rebuilding the America which President Obama, up to now, has worked so very hard to destroy.

President Obama’s Smashed Hopes, Broken Dreams, and Broken Promises (Part I)

Written : July 16-17, 2012

Candidate Obama said that he wouldn’t add a dime to the federal deficit (he assured us he would cut it in half). Yet, he added more to it in 4 years as President Bush did in 8. He promised that his administration would be the most transparent in history – and then hid hundreds of pages of documents from Congress, all detailing the Mexican gun operation entitled, “Fast and Furious.” After assuring he’d televise the entire health care debate so the American public could understand the issues, one found almost none of it on TV, the Democrats blocked the Republicans from the debate, created the bill by themselves, and said they had to pass it so the rest of us could see what was in it!

After convincing us of his administration’s honesty and fairness, his bill’s passage was tied to back room deals and old-fashioned arm-twisting, reminiscent of the smoked-filled rooms the Democrats used to participate in but complain about. Mr. Obama told us that the health care penalty for those who didn’t buy a policy was absolutely not a tax, but the Supreme Court decided that the only way the entire health care bill could be upheld as constitutional was by calling it a tax. Jack Rafferty, of CNN (part of the mainstream media’s rooting-for-the-president crowd), said of the unaffordable health care bill, “It was all just another lie that was told in order to get elected.”

President Obama said that if he didn’t fix the economy his presidency would be a one-term proposition. He didn’t improve it, but stubbornly runs his campaign for a second term anyway. He has the nerve to whine about his opponent, Mitt Romney’s outsourcing of jobs, while this president booted a good deal of the space program over to Eastern Europe. (His rationale must be that it doesn’t directly help the middle class and the poor.) Sadly, the Russians now launch our astronauts into space, and NASA does not. This president’s also okay with outsourcing our oil drilling to Brazil, and promised the Brazilians that America would be their best customer!

President Obama, after promising hope and change, now blames hurricanes, tsunamis, the Arab spring, and, of course, President Bush for his failures. Looks like it didn’t turn out the way this inexperienced, not-even-one-term Senator and former community organizer planned. He rolled his dice and failed. Aside from creating an enormous federal bureaucracy, doubling the national debt, knocking business people, creating a poor environment for businesses to flourish by increasing taxes and regulations, and pushing socialist policies such as government dependency, his supporters claim President Obama did a lot for us! I wonder what that is? Let’s replace him in November with an experienced person, Governor Mitt Romney, who works well with others, and knows a thing or two about running large operations, and creating jobs.

U.N.’s Agenda For the 21st Century – Very Interesting, But Disturbing

Written : July 8-10, 2012

I'm no expert on the transparent and gigantic U.N. Agenda 21 movement yet, but from my research so far, it sounds like a wonderful idea. Save the world for future generations, they say. How can anyone argue with that? However, while reading ICLEI and many other documents supporting the idea of changing the world for the benefit of those not yet born, I feel sick, and I think I now know why.

Carbon dioxide, this movement says, is a poison and must be purged from our environment via incredible reduction goals with no regard to how this is to be done. It features a subtle push to indoctrinate our descendants into a supreme worship of the United Nations and its sustainability culture – over and above patriotism for one's own country. The Agenda for the 21st century, like many far-left radicals, assaults superior nations' successes as evil, militaristic and violent, material, and too focused upon production and consumption. It counts on local governments and their power to suggest in detail, how to rearrange society and its infrastructure, for what they believe is in the best interests of mankind. Those most convinced of business' propensity to pollute must ask, "Who the heck are these people, what is at the heart of their desires, and why do they know best?" In other words, "They are not the boss of me," and, "Who put them in charge?"

The environmentalists believe in empowering the U.N. as a global government, over-regulating and threatening personal freedoms (such as property rights) for the relentless purpose of reducing earth's carbon footprint. Sorry, I pledged my allegiance to America, and, much as I love her, not to Mother Earth. I think that carbon dioxide is a gas and not a threat, and that global warming is not man-made, but a blip in the climactic ups and downs of this planet.

This movement is socialist in nature, favoring in every respect, the community over the individual. For that alone I must oppose it – although I assert that their goal, of maintaining the earth for the future - is a respectable one. We hear the lie every day: Conservatives support dirtier air and water. No, we don't. But we don't like to be forced into doing anything, and as Americans, we all like our freedoms and choose over and over again to protect them.

Many on the right call Agenda 21 a conspiracy and a power-grab, but, although it might be both, I choose to resist those temptations - at least for now. I'll try to dig deeper into Agenda 21 and report back to you what I find. If you find yourself curious, please check out the Agenda 21 links provided in this blog post. Each one will link to others. The amount of information on the web is enormous, so a handful of links will get you started. After you get started, Google: Sustainability [your city], [your state] and if they are implementing or plan to implement Agenda 21 in your area soon, you will find out.

Supreme Court Upholds Obama’s Unaffordable ObamaCare Act as a Huge Tax (Some Say it’s a Penalty)

Written : July 03, 2012

Before ObamaCare passed everyone agreed that the American health care system required fixing. Both sides knew what they wanted to do. However, President Obama declared, “We won,” and excluded the Republicans from input on the Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid creation. No ideas allowed for inclusion by conservatives. Can anyone not understand why we oppose it? As you may recall, the Dems arm-twisted their own Senators and the bill passed by just five votes in a House of Representatives run by Democrats and by one in the Senate with an even larger Democratic majority.

Okay, President Obama’s (POTUS’) bill affords coverage to those who can’t afford it. Libs say the 4 best things about it are: 1. You are covered regardless of pre-existing conditions. 2. The mean old insurance companies can’t drop you when you get sick and 3. There’s no lifetime cap on coverage. 4. Kids can remain on their parents’ plan until they’re 26! Don’t these sound wonderful? I like all four, but who will pay for all this, and how would the insurance companies not go under from such an extreme new burden? How can prices possibly decrease when coverage increases by leaps and bounds? Don’t we need to ask the questions and figure it out - prior to Congress passing the bill? Then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said that they had to first pass the bill before you (the American people) could see what’s in it. And she snickered when she said it. Doesn’t that make you even a little suspicious?

U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) Supreme Justice John Roberts’ unpredictable decision to declare the massive Obamacare program constitutional surprised both sides. The right and the left believed he would help strike it down. Indeed, Roberts declared the Affordable Care Act’s unconstitutionality via the commerce clause but declared it legal as a tax. Despite this Supreme Court decree, Nancy Pelosi and other liberals still deny it’s a tax and say instead that it’s a penalty for the few, but as many as 4 million will pay the tax to ObamaCare’s massive IRS expansion. But we’re not fooled by the rhetoric.

Liberals rejoiced as conservatives wrung their hands, but wait a minute. The Republican base and the Tea Party feel rejuvenated. Just as Democrats urge that the discussion is over (again), the fight to cut unaffordable spending continues. Many termed Justice Roberts’ careful calculation brilliant. I don’t think he’s that clever, but I do believe it will help conservatives in the long run. Americans, for the most part, enjoy the freedom of thinking and deciding for ourselves and keeping government out of our lives. ObamaCare is so despised, mainly because of its extreme taxation power over inaction; not buying a health care policy. I hope that this alone will assist Governor Romney’s election to the presidency. Which new inactivity will the federal government decide to tax? Not donating to charity? Not attending a rally in support of the president? Not supporting a liberal cause?

Liberals needn’t be afraid, though. Once ObamaCare is watered down when President Romney grants all the states waivers (as hundreds of the president’s friends received), a more sensible and more affordable act will be passed which will benefit all of us while preserving our economy.
