Annalee Newitz
Annalee Newitz wrote an article recently, published in Discover Magazine and partly found online (you have to pay to see it all), about the future of cities. She appeared on Washington Journal on June 5, 2013 to speak about it. Newitz doesn’t talk about traditional growth, however. Annalee says, “…we’ll probably convert urban spaces into biological organisms.” No, these are not edible cities, but places where bridges repair themselves and show evidence of healing through scarring. “The biological city could provide us with food and energy security for millennia to come.” Her article is entitled, How to Death-Proof the Cities of the Future. It’s based on her book, Scatter, Adapt, and Remember – How Humans Will Survive a Mass Extinction. Ms. Newitz speculates that “the whole planet may be about to enter a new phase of mass extinction,” and most of these have been caused by climate change. So, here we go again… “The evidence is mounting…” she says. What evidence? Climate change (I just said that!), of course, which is the environmentalists’ new, more politically correct term for man-made Global Warming. More evidence for you, she says, is that so many species went extinct over the last 200 years. I’m not making this up!
Learning about Agenda 21
Newitz, a likeable personality, is a futurist to be sure, and is generally thoughtful when it comes to mankind's future. However, with regard to worldly disasters she appears in almost every way to support the United Nation's Agenda 21, the environmentalist's master plan for changing human society into a single communitarian state. Keywords are "sustainable" and "smart," among others. Listen for them.
Agenda 21 – The Trojan Horse
”Cities are a place where most people will be living over the next, coming centuries..." Environmentalists (and others) are rooting for this. The U.N. estimates that by 2050, 67% of the world’s populations will be living in cities.” Remember, Agenda 21, comes from the U.N. They created this rigid plan for the 21st Century in the late 1980’s, for your descendants to live where the rule-makers want them to live – in cities, where they can be more easily manipulated and controlled. It must be our immediate goal to focus on cities, she says, “if we want to see the future of humanity progress.” Like most proponents of Agenda 21 and the new, radical environmental movement, she seems to think that if we don’t force people into cities against their will, we will regress, and, as we know, that simply is not true.
The city is a process, according to Annalee Newitz.
Ms. Newitz then concludes, as do urban planners through Agenda 21, that “we need to be pushing our cities toward being more survivable.” This means preparedness, such as for natural disasters. That sounds okay. But then she tells us we must change the materials we make cities out of, like self-healing, or smart materials. As you recall, Agenda 21 calls for more smart growth. It took less than four minutes for her to utter the word, “sustainable,” the mainstay of Agenda 21.
