Justice and the Zimmerman Case

Justice is blind.
Justice is blind.

The U.S. justice system was founded on the premise that no innocent person is to be jailed - ever. Our forward-thinking founding fathers deliberately and thankfully created it in opposition to witch hunts of the past, where people pointed their fingers, cried, “Witch!” and the accused were burned at the stake. This is now called, “mob justice,” and it is backward and foolhardy. Our way stands for the individual person. He or she must always be presumed innocent until proven guilty - beyond a reasonable doubt, independent of whether or not we agree or disagree with the verdict later on. The American founders would rather have had a boatload of guilty men walk free than any one innocent person suffer punishment for uncommitted crimes. The reason: The brutality of past dictatorships and the inequities of royal rule. My own father, a Communist and later, a socialist, didn’t like the system but respected it, and stood with unwavering support for this principle. He taught me that if I ever wanted a law changed, I should respect it, never break it, and at the same time, work for its change through the system.

We use evidence, not emotions.
We use evidence, not emotions.

The law is blind, they say. I served on Jury Duty in Florida twice. A man stood accused of drunk driving both times. We (two separate juries) convicted the one I empathized with and found the other man innocent (whom I felt deserved punishment). Under the law, each of these juries had to abide by the instructions given by each judge, and we adhered to the letter of the law each time. I didn’t like either decision, but felt compelled to decide both – against my feelings. This is why it is said that justice is blind.

If we don’t support our imperfect system, the innocent shall serve time.
If we don’t support our imperfect system, the innocent shall serve time.

During a third trial in Colorado, I served as a juror in the case of a fine looking, well-dressed man, who stood accused of robbery. His story sounded plausible, and as each other juror became convinced of his guilt, I made certain to give the man every benefit of the doubt. I almost hung the jury, ensuring that we covered every possible out for the guy – until the other jurors proved his guilt to me, according to the evidence presented in court. When the head juror read the verdict I felt horrible, convicting another human being of a crime. His lawyers presented him as such a fine, upstanding member of society. However, after the trial ended, the judge and lawyers from both sides came separately to visit us just before we left. We asked them about the plaintiff, and one of them told us the man had already been convicted of several other crimes. I thought we made the right decision, but I’m glad I did the right thing and gave him a chance during our deliberations. Criminal or not, and no matter how you feel about the defendant or victim, every accused person deserves a chance.

The law is set up to give even the worst person the best chance for acquittal. Consider the alternative. Our system may not be perfect, and we may not agree with each verdict, but we must not be like the people who participated in the witch trials. Innocent until proven guilty – beyond a reasonable doubt, is the best policy. We must stand by the legal system; it’s the best the world has to offer. Would you want to be convicted of a crime you didn’t commit only because someone thought you might be guilty?

…And to the republic for which it stands...
…And to the republic for which it stands...

There seem to be plenty of people who want to inject race into the Zimmerman case, but our legal system conducted the trial under laws passed in the U.S. and Florida. I think the case in question should not be intellectualized. It’s simply one trial. As in my own experience as a juror, the prosecution and the defense presented evidence and a jury reached a verdict – independent of the feelings of any one juror. Is there still some racism in our society? Sure, but that’s a different discussion. Each of us has the choice to assign racism to this case, or not. I realize that there’s always an alternative viewpoint, but I believe it is divisive to do so, and therefore, wrong. The prosecution had its chance to prove Mr. Zimmerman guilty, beyond a reasonable doubt, and the jury found that it did not.

Jonathan Alter – Journalist, or Left-Wing Activist?

Written : July 24, 2013

Regardless of your political affiliation, please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

The MSM sees Mr. Alter as a journalistic genius.
The MSM sees Mr. Alter as a journalistic genius.

Jonathan Alter, a member of the mainstream media (MSM), is held in high regard by his peers and is known by some mild terms, like ‘columnist’ and ‘author.’ His latest book is called, “The Center Holds, Obama and His Enemies.” Naturally, the use of the word ‘enemies,’ implies that those evil Republicans are out to get the president. It can’t be that we disagree with Mr. Obama’s policies, oh, no. It’s not that the president won’t work with our guys, naah. Alter discussed the untouchable’s second term on CSPAN’s Washington Journal a month ago, on June 24, 2013. Many in the MSM, I recall, predicted doom and gloom for President Bush’s second term, but not here. Now it’s, “This president can only succeed if the Republicans would just go away – or change their minds.” On TV, Alter showed confidence in the president’s ability to recover from the multitude of scandals; he has plenty of time. Sure, when you have a favorable media, I suppose you can overcome adversity, especially if all the nagging problems are completely ignored.

The Center Holds, Alter’s New Book, has a rather paranoid subtitle.
The Center Holds, Alter’s New Book, has a rather paranoid subtitle.

Alter says that the IRS and NSA stories are not going to be permanent blemishes on President Obama’s record. Given the media’s bias, he may be right. Like many of his colleagues, he’s excited about the possibility that if immigration reform doesn’t pass the House, the Republicans won’t be able to get their candidate elected in 2016. He, like many on the left, perpetuates the myth that all of a sudden conservatives support immigration reform, when we have been proponents of change in this area all along. Conservatives want to secure the border first, and then address the issue, but no one in the MSM wants you to realize it. They prefer that you believe the lie instead, that people on the right hate everyone, including grandma, and love dirty air and poisoned water.

One of Alter’s Other Books - The Promise.
One of Alter’s Other Books - The Promise.

Jonathan Alter also says that the Obama campaign stealthily visited the Latino community many times (quietly, to avoid attention), in order to win the hearts and minds of those voters. According to Mr. Alter, the immigration bill is now a direct result of that outreach… If the Republicans had done the same, though, they’d have been accused of buying votes, but in this case, it’s a wonderful tactic. If you believe there’s fairness in the media, google a left-wing pundit like Mr. Alter and a conservative journalist, like Sean Hannity, and compare the wording.

Jonathan Alter, neither a reporter or a journalist, is a liberal pundit.
Jonathan Alter, neither a reporter or a journalist, is a liberal pundit.

Alter thinks he knows why the president is so silent. He said that President Obama learned that if he raised his profile too high, or come out in favor of something, the Republicans would immediately come out against it. Sort of like each time President Bush did the same, and the Democrats and the media came out against him. They called Bush ‘imperial’ for ‘hiding’ during his second term, but in this case it’s politically smart. Sure. I’ve seen that all presidents do this. There’s nothing smart or sinister about it, unless you push a political agenda.

Jonathan Alter spent 28 years at Newsweek, no wonder they love him.
Jonathan Alter spent 28 years at Newsweek, no wonder they love him.

It’s amazing how important the media moguls think President Obama’s legacy is, when they couldn’t wait for Bush to leave. While Mr. Alter says that his job is to hold politicians from both parties accountable, he only holds Republicans accountable. Democrats were not obstructionist during President Bush’s term, only Republicans are now, during President Obama’s. If Democrats had passed Bush’s Social Security reforms I’m sure Mr. Alter and the rest of the MSM would have had a fit, but if Republicans pass the Democrats’s immigration reform they are “stepping up.” This seems just a bit one-sided to me.

Alter’s an MSNBC kind of guy, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Alter’s an MSNBC kind of guy, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Mr. Alter is a liberal and a proponent of the president’s policies, but I don’t hold that against him. The media pretends that he’s a fair journalist, and that’s what I find reprehensible. He’s neither. To explain it to left-wingers, he sounds like a liberal Sean Hannity to me. I don’t say that my blog is journalism, but neither is Mr. Alter’s work. He’s as partisan as I am. He said that righties need to stop resisting Obamacare, no matter what we might think of it, and we need more investment in infrastructure. He’s right, some roads and bridges do need repair, but doesn’t that sound rather familiar?

NASA’s Charles Bolden and - Is the Space Program only for Liberals?

Written : July 4, 10, and 18, 2013

Charles Bolden, the current Administrator of NASA.
Charles Bolden, the current Administrator of NASA.

A friend recently pointed out to me that my support for the U.S. space program goes against my conservative beliefs. I never thought of it that way, but is he right? He said that as a person on the right I should support a tiny or even a non-existent space program – smaller government. When it comes to NASA, I’m for a larger federal agency. Like my friend, some might say that makes me a liberal in this sense. What’s going on?

Charles Bolden was a shuttle astronaut from 1986 to 1994.
Charles Bolden was a shuttle astronaut from 1986 to 1994.

When NASA administrator Charles Bolden was to appear on CSPAN’s Q&A program (with Brian Lamb), I got excited, and set the DVR to record. Bolden, a former Space Shuttle astronaut, spoke about the Challenger accident and how it affected him. He told us about his mission to deploy the Hubble telescope, the current missions with Soyuz astronauts, and the future of space travel with commercial companies. I don’t agree with the current NASA policy set forth by both the Bush and Obama administrations (retire the shuttle and don’t pay to replace it). Even though I also disagree with NASA’s plunge into the issue of global warming, I lament that its budgets will continue to be small until leadership in the White House changes policy.

Charles Bolden on CSPAN’s Q+A program
Charles Bolden on CSPAN’s Q+A program

Why am I so fascinated with space and record hours of NASA-TV? Perhaps it’s the age-old quest to learn who we are, where we came from, and why we are here. I want to know for a fact whether mankind is alone in the universe, or are there other civilizations? Maybe it’s a carry-over from my childhood, as I viewed every Gemini and Apollo launch on TV and kept a scrap book of space-related newspaper clippings. The U.S. space agency, alone, carried out the bold will of President Kennedy, the adventurous quest to land a man the moon, and return him safely to the earth. The U.S. government has spent relatively little since it created NASA, less than the 2008 bank bailout, in fact, approximately $526 billion. Not a bad return.

The NASA logo and Administrator Bolden.
The NASA logo and Administrator Bolden.

The human species has gained so much from the space program of the 60’s and 70’s. The micro-miniaturization of everything to make payloads smaller gave us the gift of microwaves and smaller and faster computer chips. I cite other examples in a previous post. We’ll learn so much more. NASA contributes to our scientific knowledge base and increases our standard of living and in the end makes us better people. It’s well worth the expense.

Bolden, making a point.
Bolden, making a point.

Charles Bolden, a former Marine, flew on the space shuttle mission – his first - just prior to the Challenger explosion. He described the elation of his flight – and then how his joy turned to sorrow. The Q+A program went by way too quickly, and I wound up wishing he had a second hour. Yes, conservatives can love science, and the space program, too.

Colorado Rockies’ First Base Coach Lachemann Teaches Kids at the Park

Written : July 4 and 10, 2013

Regardless of your political affiliation, please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

Rene Lachemann, The Colorado Rockies’ 2013 first base coach.
Rene Lachemann, The Colorado Rockies’ 2013 first base coach.

Last year my wife and I bought into a share of home game tickets for the Colorado Rockies. Each of the members of our group can’t afford 81 home games, so we attend about 10 games a year. We’re lucky enough to sit close enough to hear the players at times, but I didn’t expect what I saw and heard from Colorado Rockies’ first base coach Rene Lachemann.

One kid at a time.
One kid at a time.

This year I won the drawing for attending the opening day game. During that game, between innings, Lachemann brought a ball over to the stands. He curled his finger at a young person and the kid walked down to field level. I could hear Lachemann speaking, “Do you go to school? …Yeah, well, listen to the teacher. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Uh, huh. Don’t start any fights with her… Listen to your mom and dad… and don’t play video games all the time…” Great advice, and then he gave the kid the ball.

Eat your vegetables, clean your room, and take the trash out.
Eat your vegetables, clean your room, and take the trash out.

At the next game, I saw a young boy sitting across from us. I told the parents about what happened at opening day and said I didn’t know if this happened all the time. So, during a pause in the action, some people in the other section got the coach’s attention and between innings, he came over with another ball. “Hey kid, come here.” I couldn’t hear any more, but asked the parents later and they said Mr. Lachemann told their son to wipe his nose! That was nice to hear, and everyone smiled.

It’s not easy, but someone’s got to do it!
It’s not easy, but someone’s got to do it!

I watched the Rockies’ broadcast on July 3, and they had the Rockies first base coach mic’d up. I think he asked a young girl if it was alright if he gave her a ball. Of course, she responded in the affirmative. Using a stern voice he said, “Don’t you lie to me!” Then he asked her, “Do you live with your mother and father?” She said yes. “When your mother says take the trash out you take it out, when your father says to clean your room you clean it up. You got a cell phone?” No. “Don’t get one…because you can’t. You play video games?” Yes. “Don’t do that either, you’ll be a dummy like the rest of these idiots, that’s all they do is play video games. When you come home from school the first thing you do is your homework, all right?” He said all of that in one breath and all the adults around her appreciated his message and smiled.

At least one person has the guts to teach children.
At least one person has the guts to teach children.

Later in the game, Lachemann (his nickname is “Latch”) spotted a young man dressed in a Dodger uniform and hat. He used the stern voice, “Turn that hat around first!” He did. “When you go to the bathroom you lift the toilet seat up. Don’t be peeing on the toilet seat, you understand that? You have a cell phone?” Yes. “Well, get rid of it. …When you eat your dinner, you eat up all your vegetables, all right? Once again everyone was smiling…

Lachemann has the right idea. When will the rest of us catch on?
Lachemann has the right idea. When will the rest of us catch on?

The third time was a charm. Rene Lachemann has a routine, and said basically the same things. He prefaces his questions with, “Hey, don’t you be lying to me.” He’s firm, but great with the kids and it’s nice to see someone in a position of authority have the guts to tell children to do the right thing. “The first thing you do when you come home from school is your homework. And, don’t fight with your sister.” Nice, and each kid gets a $30 baseball. Maybe it’s time for my grandson to meet him!

Lachemann makes the adults smile… and the kids get a ball.

Corrupt, Mismanaged IRS to Handle Obamacare – Is That What You Really Want?

Are you ready for the IRS to grow in size? It will, because it is the governmental agency tasked with enforcing the Obamacare tax. Can you wait? Members of the self-described “most transparent administration in history,” top IRS leaders took the 5th amendment when testifying before Congress. No, it doesn’t say they’re guilty, but does it do anything for President Obama’s claims of leading an honest administration?

Okay, perhaps four, but not 292.
Okay, perhaps four, but not 292.

The defenders of President Obama said that the Bush Administration’s IRS targeted liberal groups (so zeroing in on Tea Party groups is okay). Perhaps, but they didn’t go after liberal groups by the hundreds as the IRS did under the Obama administration. They didn’t do it to weaken their opponents in order to win an election.

We don’t remember Senator Joe McCarthy, we’ve learned nothing from history.
We don’t remember Senator Joe McCarthy, we’ve learned nothing from history.

Remember Senator Joe McCarthy (R-WI)? He’s the one who accused everyone on the left of being a Communist during the early 1950’s. He terrorized liberals during that time, and caused a horrific fear - for many - of being prosecuted for associating with anyone who thought liberal thoughts - to continue well into the 1990’s. He didn’t understand that America would experience a severe backlash from the left during all of the following years. He kept accusing until he insinuated that Republican President Eisenhower was a Communist. That’s when his reign of terror ended. - These guys don’t remember? After McCarthyism, how could they possibly support a policy to target conservative groups? How did they think it would make conservatives – and/or members of the Tea Party feel? What might conservative administrations do in the future? Most importantly, is it right to target anyone? Of course not.

Not only did the IRS target Tea Party groups, but they wasted plenty of taxpayer dollars (estimated at $60,000) by producing several videos. One parodied Star Trek, and another showed team-building exercises, including line-dancing. Recall that they spent over $50 million on conferences, some held in Las Vegas. Congressman Trey Gowdy called them, “maliciously self-indulgent,” as many IRS employees stayed in luxury hotel suites.

Should this agency, this corrupt IRS, run Obamacare? Will they be fair, or target conservatives when making health decisions, specifically, who should get an operation, and who should not? Should this wasteful agency hire 60,000 more workers? How much more of our taxpayer dollars will they waste?

Regardless of what you think, have a nice 4th of July!
