The Liberty Amendments by Mark Levin, Part I

Radio talk show host Mark Levin.
Radio talk show host Mark Levin.

Mark Levin, a lawyer, author, constitutionalist, and a witty commentator, believes that the people who favor federalism (a centralized government), have been running the political show for about a century while conservatives sat back and watched. He thinks it’s time for the right to express itself and stand up to the progressives, whom he calls, “regressives.” Mr. Levin insists that we live in a post-constitutional era due to the left’s century of successes.

Levin has written many books outlining his ideas, including, Men in Black: How the Supreme Court is Destroying America, Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto, Ameritopia: The Unmaking of America, and most recently, The Liberty Amendments: Restoring the American Republic. In it he proposes 11 new amendments to the U.S. Constitution in order to re-establish constitutional republicanism (which we don’t have today).

In his new book, the author focuses on Article Five of the Constitution, which states that there are two methods for amendment. One, which has been used for all of the current 27 Amendments, is to apply the legislatures to a two-thirds majority vote. The other way, which has not been used yet, is to call a convention of the states for proposing new amendments. Levin argues that we should use this second method today. This is not radical, because it would require three-fourths of the states to ratify each one.

I agree with Levin’s disgust that the left slowly took over America, by removing many long-held beliefs from the American people, such as ‘limited government.’ He says, “The states created the federal government,” but now “the states live at the behest of the federal government.” I agree with the idea that the centralized bureaucracy should have less power. While his radio personality is a bit acidic for me, I like Mark’s sarcastic sense of humor, and I laugh in our mutual frustration over the way things have gone in this country and, among other things, with the timidity of the Republican Party. Mark Levin comes off as a shy, humble man on TV, and this may surprise people who only listen to his radio show.

 Mark Levin’s Previous Book.
Mark Levin’s Previous Book.

Mr. Levin proposes something I think that most Republicans, Democrats, and Independents can all agree on. Term limits for members of Congress, which includes both houses. Twelve years, tops. No more career politicians in the Senate or House of Representatives. “They [the founders] didn’t believe in a permanent legislative class.” Very good! Our re-election rate is higher than England’s House of Lords (it was known for its members rarely leaving). In the ‘tidal wave’ election in 2010, when the Republicans won many seats, 85% of U.S. Congressmen were re-elected!

Many Americans believe that ‘the system’ is broken these days. ”The system is broken because we’re unmoored from the Constitution,” Mark Levin said, on August 16, 2013. Levin cites the imploding and yet expanding federal government, and an out-of-control national debt (unfunded liabilities are approx. $90 trillion – only a few years ago just under $70 trillion). “The notion of limited government was all swept away with a big exclamation mark with Obamacare, and so many laws before it.”

To be continued.

Who or What Do You Represent?

Written : Aug. 21, 2013

Regardless of your political affiliation, please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

When I drive down the street in my F150, I need to be cognizant of my 2012 Romney decal. Any poor perception of my driving by a former Romney supporter might be attributed to my brand of truck (Ford), or even ignored. However, some on the left - if they see my sticker - may assign my driving skills to Republicans. This is unfortunate, but is to be expected. Humans classify.

Not my truck decal, but similar.
Not my truck decal, but similar.

My company warns us that while we wear the corporate badge we represent the employer, and bad behavior on our part can be falsely perceived by a customer or a vendor as supported by the business.

I’m not proposing for us to be goody-two-shoes adults, but anything I do in public can and probably will be unfairly associated with my appearance. I wear FDNY, NYPD, and so-called ‘patriotic’ hats, and when people see me they may think of men in general, guys with grey beards, white people, Americans, or older, middle-aged people. I understand that, but don’t always remember.

Which team’s colors do you wear?
Which team’s colors do you wear?

I recently visited St. Louis and with a group of friends from all over the country, and many of us attended a Cardinals MLB game. Several wore jerseys and/or caps of other teams, as I did. For example, some of the MLB-represented teams were the Giants, Rockies, Royals, Braves, Mets, White Sox, and the Cardinals fans were terrific. However, if one of us did something stupid, it’s possible that the locals would have attributed our craziness with that of our team. I’d be embarrassed if someone hated the Rockies because of something I did! Yet, I had to live with that possibility. I can’t help what I look like, nor how anyone perceives me, but neither can anyone else.

How you act in public can reflect on others’ impressions of your image.
How you act in public can reflect on others’ impressions of your image.

I’ve been picked on as a youth by all kinds of people, mainly because I was excessively short as a youngster. However, I’ve noticed that I most clearly remember those who didn’t look like me. An extremely heavy Caucasian boy bullied me in high school and I had a hard time accepting overweight people for a long time. (Some of you thought I was going to use a different example, right?) Not the fault of any obese people I met since, but my feelings were human. I eventually overcame this, but it took a lot of time, and plenty of introspection. His momentary pleasure gave me years of prejudice and anxiety.

What the bully looks like can influence the victim for years.
What the bully looks like can influence the victim for years.

I’m not saying anyone is perfect, including me, but shouldn’t we think more often of the way people perceive us? Which logos, jerseys, or colors do you wear? How will someone perceive you as you move through your public life? Who do you represent?

Rich DeVos, Founder of Amway, Selling America, Part II

Written : Jul. 31, 2013, previously unposted

Regardless of your political affiliation, please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

Continued from last week’s post.

Rich DeVos, co-founder of the Amway Corporation
Rich DeVos, co-founder of the Amway Corporation

Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel started the Amway Corporation in 1959. Mr. DeVos is known for his powerful and positive style in delivering speeches. I once tried to sell Amway products but I am not a salesman, so I gave it up. However, one of DeVos’ best speeches has stuck with me throughout the years. It is a tribute to the American free enterprise system. I transcribed the speech a few years ago from the cassette tape I still own. It is outlined in this series, “Selling America.”

Rich DeVos:

…But you see, the thing we project, the attitude we show, has as much to do with it as anything. And so, I want to talk to you about Selling America. And I include the Canadians because I maintain you are Americans because we all live on the North American continent. (applause) And, we share a common system. (more applause which makes him pause again)

Amway co-founders Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel.
Amway co-founders Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel.

I of course welcome you and I recognize you’re Canadians, and that we’ve taken words and say we’re Americans and you’re Canadians, but we all work under the same concept. And, that’s why the border goes unguarded. And that’s why we go back and forth so freely because we have so much in common.

But, when I ask you to sell America, I maintain it’s a part of a greater job. I want you to go out from this place to be successful. I want you to achieve. I want you to use the talents God has given so you can make a contribution. I want you to assume roles of leadership so you can take those people who don’t know that the opportunities are available to them – and make them see the light.

And, maybe all they’re waiting for is a word from you. And, you know sometimes that word is so simple. It goes like this:

“Hey John, you can do it!” And you know, maybe nobody’s ever told him that. You’d better think about that. You know, my dad used to say that to me. I used to say, “Oh, I can’t do this, I can’t do that.” And he’d say, “You say can’t once more, and I’ll knock your block right through that wall!” (mild laughter)

Encouragement, Rich DeVos-style.
Encouragement, Rich DeVos-style.

So somebody kept saying to me as somebody has said to you – You can do it, you can do it, it does pay, you can get ahead, but you see those people never had it. Let me give you an example:

In your school right now there’s some girl or some boy who doesn’t dress quite as well as you think he ought to – but you’ve got your own little clique going over there in the corner, haven’t you? And so this poor soul who maybe is dressing as best they can walks by and somebody says (laughing at him), “Look at that.” (nervous laughter)

You don’t have to say any more than that, you know. They feel a little bad anyway that they can’t afford something better. But, you see, in that moment you helped to destroy that person. Because, you see, that little snicker might just have been the whole thing that broke that girl’s heart, or that boy’s heart. But a friendly word from you could have changed that whole situation.

Rich DeVos appeared on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1982.
Rich DeVos appeared on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post in 1982.

Some of you are decrying the fact that some kids in your school haven’t gone on and they’re dropping out… And you haven’t stopped to wonder the affect you had on the reason they dropped out. See, you’re the bright ones. You’re the leaders. You can afford some slop. And what I mean is that - so you skipped a day. But the problem was when you skipped you didn’t do it alone. You said, “Come on, John, go with us for a day, we’re going to this lake to go swimming. Oh, we’ll skip today. Well, when you came back it was alright, you caught up in a hurry, so you took a grade down that day – it was alright. It didn’t matter to you, but you know to John it might have just knocked the edge off it. And then he slipped just a little behind that day. He never quite caught up and when end of the semester came he flunked the course. Not because he wasn’t the greatest, because he wasn’t that smart, but he was making it until you taught him a habit that took him away. He couldn’t afford that day - you could. But you undermined his whole future because you taught him a bad habit that day.

Rich DeVos: ‘You can DO it!’
Rich DeVos: ‘You can DO it!’

You see, the little things you do folks, affect the lives of people every day. There’s no escaping the impact you have on others. And certainly as the leaders in your community you’re just not one of the gang, you’re one they point to, they look to… And every word of encouragement can change the lives of the others with whom you live.

Rich DeVos, Founder of Amway, Selling America, Part I

Written : Mar. 20, 2013, previously unposted

Regardless of your political affiliation, please ‘like’ From the Left to the Right’s Facebook Page

Jay Van Andel and Rich DeVos, the co-founders of Amway.
Jay Van Andel and Rich DeVos, the co-founders of Amway.

Many years ago I tried my hand at selling Amway products. While others may excel at selling, it’s not for me. Nevertheless, I heard the greatest speech of my life while listening to an Amway tape. I purchased it from the company at the suggestion of our sponsor, the one who took my wife and me under his wing. One of the two founders of the Amway Corporation, Rich DeVos, spoke in front of a group of about 1,800 young people at the 23rd annual Junior Achievers conference. The recording was made, by my calculations, sometime in 1966. Some of the words may seem outdated but the message is “right on.”

Rich DeVos, back then, Selling America
Rich DeVos, back then, Selling America

Rich DeVos:

Fellow Achievers, and Fellow Americans, Canadian Friends from the north, it’s an honor to be with you tonight to share a few thoughts about the great system that makes both of these countries the most prosperous on earth. Before, however, I build you up too much, because you see you are the top in Junior Achievement. You’re here because what you’ve done – you’re proven achievers and performers – I would like to give you a little quiz. It goes like this: What I want to know is - Before you go out to rebuild the world, have you learned how to clean up your bedroom? (mild laughter)

Now, is that a bad question? I don’t know. (applause) You know, we live in an age where the Junior Achievement organization and those of you who are gathered here stand contrary - to what many people in this country believe. And as I wander and as you wander you find people who don’t believe that people should be rewarded in direct proportion to the effort they put forth. They think that all people should be treated equally like in the socialistic or the Communistic governments. And what that means is that everybody should be equal. What they really mean to say is that everybody should be equally poor – because that’s about where they stand.

Rich DeVos, speaking more recently.
Rich DeVos, speaking more recently.

But something happens in the minds of people – those who are not here – those who are roaming the streets tonight – saying that America and the free enterprise system as shared in this country and Canada is not available to them. They claim the American Dream passed them by. But something happened in their attitudes that they were never exposed to find out how great this system really is.

And, so it is exciting to be here but I have a couple of one liners – we call ‘em, from people who have applied for welfare. And you've got to understand something of their attitude. And, so, here’s a gal and she writes to the welfare department… she’s writing for her neighbor. And she says Mrs. Jones has not had any clothes for a year and has been visited regularly by the clergy. (mild laughter)

Rich DeVos, Selling America
Rich DeVos, Selling America

Now, the next lady writes: She says, “I cannot get sick pay. I have six children. Can you tell why?” (more laughter)

And, the next lady says, “This is my eighth child. What are you going to do about it?” (more laughter)

Now, here’s a state of mind which says, “What are you going to do about my problem? What are you going to do to help me?” Implying here that there’s nothing she can do to help herself.

And another lady says, “Unless I get my husband’s money pretty soon, I will be forced to lead an immortal life.” (some laughter) And apparently that’s her only out.

Another one says, “You have changed my little boy to a girl. Will this make a difference?” (I hope so, I really do.)

Now, this is an attitude, isn’t it? On the part of people blaming somebody else for their plight. I appreciate the efforts of government to solve people’s poverty problems, but I cannot tolerate their constant complaint that it’s somebody else’s problem that put ‘em there. I believe enough in our system that I maintain anybody who wants to, and is willing to put forth the effort, can solve their own poverty problem.

(applause) I think being poor is something many people do... (more applause which makes him pause)

It sort of has to do with being poor by choice. But you see, that doesn’t solve the problem, does it? Because somebody somewhere has got to reach that person or those persons, millions of them. Because they don’t know, they don’t realize that it can change their life if they’ll but look at the opportunity in a new perspective.

Rich DeVos.
