Things I Never Expected to See

Written : Jan. 29, 2013

Gov. Andrew Cuomo Gov. Andrew Cuomo Gov. Andrew Cuomo

YouTube of Cuomo Speech/Rant

I never thought I’d see the Governor of New York go ballistic in support of gun control. The rant portion of Governor Cuomo’s speech begins at approx. 2:30 in the video above, and lasts for about a minute.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Women on the Front Lines

I never wanted to fear that my daughter or granddaughter might suffer loss of limb by fighting an enemy on the front lines, but I do worry about this now.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Sen. John Kerry

The idea that a soldier who told stories about American atrocities during the Vietnam War could one day become the U.S. Secretary of State strikes me as quite unbelievable.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Jack Lew Jack Lew

How can a nominee for U.S. Treasurer (one of two who signs dollar bills) be so incapable of signing his name?

-------------------------------------------------------------

Manti Te’o

Given the critical issues of the day (the government has no more money, The Middle East is going nuts, Al Qaeda isn’t dead, taxes are up, North Korea threatens to attack the U.S. with nuclear missiles, the president is grabbing more and more executive power), don’t you find the media’s obsession over a football player’s fake dead girlfriend a bit excessive, let alone somewhat creepy?

-------------------------------------------------------------

16 oz. sugary drink ban

I never thought I’d see a 16 oz. limit on the sale of sugary drinks. I’d buy two, instead, wouldn’t you?

This is the best one: I never dreamt that a hand-held device would ever be able to identify a song! (The android app is called Shazam.)

Why Everyone Pines for 41 (President George H. W. Bush)

Written : Jan. 13 and 22, 2013

 George H. W. Bush

On my DVR on Oct. 30, 2012, I recorded a film by Jeffrey Roth simply titled, 41. It’s about America’s 41st president, George Herbert Walker Bush. The blurb says, “President George H.W. Bush discusses his political career, family life, and military service,” but the movie covered so much more. And, thankfully, the interviewer didn’t try to steal the show! Illustrated with new footage and old, the gentle president described his life in a quiet, conversational tone. By limiting the airing of his questions, Jeffrey Roth allowed President Bush to express himself in great detail. He spoke about other great world leaders, all the previous jobs he held, his wife Barbara, his children, and expressed the love he has for all of his dogs. I enjoyed the lack of pretense and the president’s unique, easy-going, soft-spoken manner. Most on the right respect his place in history, basically how he ran President Reagan’s third term and presided over the end of the cold war with grace and strength.

 George H. W. Bush

This humble person always knew his privileged station in life, accepted it, and decided to serve instead of take. No matter where you stand on the political spectrum you can’t help but like this kind man. Few know his family called him ‘Poppy’ – from the time he was a child! Prescott Bush, his father, taught the family to appreciate the good life and the desire to help society. Most wealthy families follow a similar path; the Kennedys included. He praised his mother as the one who taught him open-mindedness. He heard her when she told him to not brag, and give the other guy a chance - listen to him and consider his opinions. What a sweet, endearing quality, and so many on the left today admire ‘41’ for it. They, like liberal writer Tom Friedman, love his middle-of-the-road tack and yearn for his willingness to consider their arguments and compromise. That was Poppy's way and an echo of his time. From his presidency I liked his willingness to discuss his love for broccoli, his personal mannerisms and unimportant, but memorable quotes, like, “Not gonna do it,” and “at this juncture.”

 George H. W. Bush

’41’ played sports in college, and served in the U.S. Navy in WWII. He met Babe Ruth and was photographed with him. The world-famous Yankee and home run star formally presented the Ivy League school with his life story, and he handed it over to - George Herbert Walker Bush! Admitting to a lack of scholarly ways, President Bush 41 said that he tried various jobs until he succeeded in the oil business. He then decided to run for office. We tend to think of him only as a former president but he experienced and accomplished many other things. His other public service jobs don’t come to mind right away, including U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, U.S. CIA Director, and he served as Ronald Reagan’s Vice President during both of President Reagan’s terms. Most Americans don’t know that he and his wife Barbara lost a 4-year-old daughter to Leukemia in 1953, and that he still feels the pain.

 George H. W. Bush

He walks slowly, and with a limp and a cane now. His voice quivers more than ever, but he vows to sky-dive again on his 90th birthday (I wish I had such courage)! And as with a favorite relative, I wish he weren’t so old and feeble. If I could I’d like to give him back a few years: he deserves them – but, of course, I can’t.

If George Herbert Walker Bush were president today, many on the right would fear his tendency to turn left and possibly reverse himself. Those on the left might distrust or hate him as a member of the opposition. But he served his time well. Many on the right have grown to admire some things about President Clinton’s presidency - and many on the left revere this man. People of both parties now thank him for his service and most would embrace the chance to share a meal and a drink with him, if only for a few minutes. From watching this film, I know I would.

Gun Owners Outed in NY by The Journal News – Interactive Map Reveals Their Locations - Paper Then Hides Behind Security Guards Armed with Guns

Written : Jan. 5-6, 13, 15, 2013

The Journal News says that people who own guns live on the red dots and those who don’t are located in the blank areas on the map. Who will be more likely use that information to their advantage?

Journal News Map

If a student punches another, how should we react? We may suggest some sort of punishment, but we wouldn’t think the bully’s hand should be amputated and we sure don’t believe in revealing where the bully lives so that everyone can harass him. Tucker Carlson, of The Daily Caller, said recently, “Who cares what kind of tool he used, why did he do it? That’s the question.” This is indeed the best response. As we know, guns are inanimate objects, but people commit murder, and the vast majority of guns used in crimes are unregistered, illegal weapons.

The frenzy to ban guns reappeared just after the Newtown, CT shooting on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012. The Journal News, a newspaper liberally serving the area just north of New York City, decided to publish the identities of local gun owners in Westchester and Rockland counties – apparently to shame them. No one questions the legality of the action because in New York State gun ownership is public information, but was it the right thing to do? Not only did the paper name names, but it published an interactive map with their addresses. By omission, this also pointed anyone interested to the unprotected homes in each area. In 2008, candidate Barack Obama, while supporting gun rights, promised not to take our guns away, but here come the vigilantes, anyway. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and his posse have suggested they begin confiscating legally owned weapons.

The idea to embarrass gun owners backfired (pun intended), as experts and former criminals pointed out after the fact that the data makes these counties more vulnerable to robberies. There are unintended consequences, of course. Consider the battered housewife or stalked person, who legally purchased a gun for protection. If their names and addresses can be found with the click of a mouse, will they be safer? The people once arrested and / or prosecuted can now easily identify and locate the retired law enforcement professionals living in the zone (such as lawyers, judges, and police officers). Will the released information enable revenge attacks or killings? Criminals have warned that these areas will be cased in the coming months until new targets can be determined. The possibilities for gun theft increase when crazed addicts and crooks know a weapon’s location. Thieves have broken into at least one house in the area so far, probably looking for weapons to steal.

Others predict that the featured residences will be ignored and those people without permits could become victims. Some gun owners expressed elation that their addresses can now easily be identified as gun-protected: it makes them feel a whole lot safer. However, equating careful and lawful gun owners to mindless mass-murdering shooters is wrong. The newspaper should bear full responsibility for all the fallout resulting from their irresponsible, thoughtless, and senseless act. The editor (Cyndee Royle Lambert) and publisher (Janet Hasson) did not consider the consequences of their actions. In typical, elite, cowardly fashion, they pestered others with incessant questions in the past, but they themselves are answering to no one these days. Judge Jeanine Pirro, the most interesting and sensible of the TV pundits on the subject, was one of those ‘outed’ by the paper. She recently pondered if it makes as much or more sense to publish the names and addresses of the recipients of unemployment benefits – or welfare recipients - since any of them could be scamming the system and/or breaking the law. Since publishing the gun locations, The Journal News, in a fit of hypocrisy, hired armed guards to protect their location, its people, and their residences. Apparently they don’t like it when others know their home addresses.

Actors who make their living by appearing in violent movies, many of whom shoot rapid-fire weapons in those films, created an ad which asks the audience to demand a plan (for gun control). Here’s the clean version which includes interspersed shots of the same actors shooting deadly weapons while at the same time asking you for tougher gun laws. It’s okay if they make money conveying the idea of murder, but they absolve themselves of any responsibility when madmen kill for real while mimicking violent movies or TV shows. Most of those speaking on behalf of gun control laws either carry or hire people to do it for them. President Obama described the day of the Newtown shooting as “the worst day of my presidency," but his family is understandably protected by gun-carrying members of the secret service.

Listen to how so many stick up for the privacy of the common man. You’ve heard them speak. They reveal a level of paranoia second to none when it comes to how much they think they’re being watched by “the government.” Many refuse to give their phone numbers out to sales people and won’t fill out raffle forms - if their e-mail address is required. “None of their business,” they say. Most of these people fight for the right to privacy for everyone else, including those who have abortions (even those underage). But for some reason, gun owners don’t qualify for the same right to privacy - in their eyes. They’re wrong, the right to bear arms, as laid out in the Constitution’s Second Amendment, should also be protected as private.

Instead of banning guns we need to scan for potential mental illness when permits are sought and guns are bought. We need to educate people of all ages – gun owners and those who don’t have permits - about firearms and gun safety. Those who purchase and then carry a concealed weapon will seek this knowledge. As they say, more education is always better.

Agenders – Who Are They and What Do They Want?

Written : Dec. 27, 28, 2012 and Jan. 8, 2013

Agenders Poster Agenders Logo

Agenda 21 was an idea environmentalists thought up to leave the earth a better place than they found it for the 21st Century. Many years ago extremists flipped this idealistic pipe dream over and turned it into Earth Day Gone Wild. If implemented as designed, national sovereignty and private property rights will disappear forever, and a tight set of controls will remain - forced down your throat by a more knowledgeable elite. Those who resist this form of rigid control are called Agenda 21 Enders, or Agenders.

They are certainly not ‘The Avengers,’ but who are the Agenders? Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh, in a post entitled ’Agenders’ and Right Wing Conspirators, on the Canada Free Press web site on Feb. 12, 2012, examined an article written by Andrew Cohen (no relation) in The Atlantic about a week earlier. She accurately pointed out that Mr. Cohen, like most Agenda 21 supporters, completely misrepresented not only U.N. Agenda 21, but why many oppose it. In his piece, Is the UN Using Bike Paths to Achieve World Domination?, Andrew Cohen implied the Agenders are extremists. In fact, they are not out of the main stream, but informed citizens. Many Americans will not stand for the radical U.N. rules (termed ‘guidelines’) which, if ever set in stone, would remove many freedoms we take for granted. We, too, love our planet, but we don’t agree with the ‘save the earth - or die’ mentality. That is what is too extreme for us.

Mr. Andrew Cohen, it's not the science or stewardship of the earth we oppose. It's the politicization of the environmental movement. For example, if the earth is warming, great, we can all agree if the evidence presents itself. But scientists who tell us it's man-made have already manipulated their statistics to support a favorite outcome. Why? It’s due to politics, but as odd as it may seem, this is not a left-right issue!

A few years ago, some reporters revealed in secret e-mails that global warming scientists in Europe admitted exaggerating / making up data to prove their points. The fact that their goal is more important than science is what makes it political. Look at the people who profit from selling items from the scare. Al Gore is one who spoke against large carbon footprints. Yet, videos surfaced showing him boarding private jets, which ‘exhale’ many times the carbon per person than commercial flight. Why do the alarmists use these gas guzzlers? Perhaps they don't believe that carbon as a poison, either, especially if they have to sacrifice, too!
