Abortion or Adoption?

Thank Mom for Choosing Life

It is with great sadness that I report to you that while at the doctor’s office last week, I read the January 14, 2013 article in Time magazine on the relentless pro-abortion movement. No, I didn’t feel badly because the author, Kate Pickert, bemoaned the fact that abortions have been declining over the past 40 years. I choked up over what might not have been. I felt a tear come to my eye!

My daughter had a son in 2008, when she was 18 – and not yet married. Right after she found out about her pregnancy and my grandson was smaller than a pencil point, she told my wife that she could never choose to have an abortion. My wife and I adopted her in early 1990, when she was three weeks old. Something I hadn’t considered to that point was that my (not politically conservative) daughter always felt a great deal of gratitude toward her birth mother, always thankful that she decided for adoption, rather than abortion. This is of paramount importance to a person incapable of exercising a ‘choice’ at the time. Rather than no existence, she was mercifully allowed to live her life – any kind of life.

Give your child a chance

With our granddaughter safely secured in her high chair, my wife and I are busy preparing a meal. My grandson helps, too. Pots and pans clang, refrigerator door opens and closes multiple times, and we all move as if in a pre-choreographed dance. ”Hey, Papa?” my four-year-old grandson asks.

”Yes?” I think he’s going to ask me something about food.

”I love you,” he says, matter-of-factly. My heart melts, and my thoughts turn to my own grandmother. She once told me that I would understand how much she loved me when I had grandchildren of my own. I can’t imagine my life without him! I wonder where I’d be if my daughter had decided upon abortion instead of seeing her pregnancy through. Everyone who meets my wonderful grandson says he’s so cute, sweet, handsome, or tells me he looks just like me! (That one always makes me smile!) Among other things, we play cars, have a catch, make popcorn, and watch movies together. When I read about advocates for abortion and their thoughts on the subject, I feel dejected and a little surprised. Too bad they don’t know me, or those like me - or my daughters’ story. I’m here to tell them. I love my family, and my grandson is one of my favorite people – ever. I also know that I’m one of his.

I wasn’t expected, I was selected

The Time magazine article focuses on the strategy the left concocts to suck more and more fetuses out of women’s wombs. They promise to never give up. They say a woman’s right to choose always triumphs over a baby’s right to live a life, any sort of life. They believe the cool, new term reproductive justice, sells better than the old term, pro-choice. When a cause loses its luster, the left’s activists generally change the name, as from global warming to climate change. The author of the article actually describes the procedure and unwittingly discusses the “whirring of the vacuum aspirator.” Although the piece seems thoughtful and discusses many real reasons why the number of abortions has dropped, the thought of the intentional termination of a pregnancy disgusts me more than ever, now that I know my grandson. He makes a lot of people chuckle, including me!

Adoption vs. Abortion
Adoption vs. Abortion, Which Do You Prefer?

I don’t call the supporters of abortion names, and I agree – they do have a right to choose. I don’t wish to take that choice away from anyone, but I urge them to consider adoption. It’s a lot less gory, and it hands someone a chance at living a life, any life. Perhaps they need more education about adoption. Let’s grant another grandfather a chance to hear what makes music to my ears:

My granddaughter, grandson, wife, and I are walking into Walmart. ” Papa?” my innocent, wide-eyed grandson asks. I expect him to ask a profound question about toys, marketing, or life, any of which I may have trouble answering.

”Yes?” I respond.

”I love you,” he says, with no effort whatsoever. I thank God I lived long enough to hear this!

”I love you, too,” I say, “very much. When you become a grandfather yourself, you’ll know just how much.”

Instead of Indoctrination, Lopsided Bias in Schools Can Backfire and Create Conservatives

Written : Apr. 14, 2013

I’m now active on Twitter. Please follow me there at @markacohen

When we speak about bias in education, many on the left will say that it refers to the behavior of students, such as social exclusion and stereotyping through name-calling. They generally believe the answer lies in the teaching of multi-culturalism. Sometimes those on the left say the educational profession perpetrates unfair testing practices against minorities. People on the right tend to focus on teachers, instead. With the advent of the cell phone, more examples of biased lessons have been made public in the last few years. Instead of presenting all points of view, some professors appear on video showing a distinct preference for liberal philosophies and a disdain for conservatives. A few call those on the right and/or their ideas names, and denigrate right-wing points of view. This is the school bias of which I write.

1984, by George Orwell
1984, by George Orwell

In Appleton, Wisconsin, 15-year-old Benji Backer, a political activist, was forced to switch schools due to teacher harassment. He said they hounded him because he dared to espouse conservative views. One of his teachers expressed jealousy for businessmen in front of the class, saying that small business owners take Fridays (and summers) off, while claiming that as a teacher he didn’t make enough to take care of his family. When Benji spoke to the teacher about his feelings at the request of his principal, the teacher reportedly cursed at him. In a free society all points of view must be taught with equal emphasis – and not misrepresented by partisans. Students must be free to make up their own minds and not be coerced or indoctrinated by radicals. When only some views are represented in a positive light we run the risk of creating a dictatorship – or we may face a fierce backlash (a non-violent refusal to believe) such prejudicial efforts.

Report bias.
Report bias.

After speaking with several teachers, I know that many feel overworked (many put in more than 40 hours a week) and they probably are underpaid. However, this does not excuse any biases they may express in the classroom. The pro-Obama video, “Mmm Mmm Mmm” was produced in a Burlington Township, New Jersey elementary school in 2009. See a large collection of such videos here. They are frightening, and make one think of indoctrination of children by rigid regimes in other countries.

Tamra Varebrook, a Milwaukee Republican, has uncovered some false definitions taught in the school system there. Examples include: Conservatism = Restricting Personal Freedoms, Liberals = Equality and Personal Freedom for everyone. My father taught me these stereotypes. When I finally realized that such generalizations were all false, the discovery helped me to become a conservative. The people perpetuating such flagrant bias in schools know not what they do.

Examples of false stereotypes taught in some schools today.

Where President Obama Went Wrong

Written : Apr. 09, 2013

I’m now active on Twitter. Please follow me there at @markacohen

President Obama began his first term by adding on to President Bush’s 2008 Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) with another stimulus, his Recovery Act (ARRA) in 2009. Neither law fixed the economy. And yet, the current president calls for more spending. He wants to invest in energy which doesn’t work (solar/wind), but won’t invest in energy which does (oil/gas/drilling/fracking). He promised to close Guantanamo, lower the Bush $6 trillion deficit (which he called treasonous), and said each family’s health care costs would decrease by an average of $2,500 per family by the end of his first term. Instead, Guantanamo is open (I’m glad), he added to the federal deficit by nearly tripling it (to $17 trillion), and increased health care costs by $3,000.

President Obama didn’t salute.
President Obama didn’t salute while Gov. Bill Richardson, Senator Hillary Clinton, and Ruth Harkin did - during the playing of the national anthem.

By the way, my own father, a self-avowed Communist, didn’t salute our flag, nor did I ever hear him sing the Star Spangled Banner. He said he wasn’t proud of our country (sound familiar?), but he also said it didn’t make him any less of a patriot, and I must agree. He both loved and hated this country. However, when I see someone not saluting or taking patriotism seriously, I can’t help it – I tend to think of my father. It doesn’t make them a bad person, but I don’t like it, and that doesn’t make me a bad person, either.

*********************************************************

I apologize. The photo I originally posted here (below) of President Obama and the First Lady saluting with their left hands was apparently doctored. A friend of mine pointed this out and after reviewing the web and seeing the original photograph, I agreed. I found a different photo of President Obama not saluting, but the reason is acceptable. Hail to the Chief was playing, and the president does not salute during that song (while everyone else does). Believe me when I say that it is becoming more and more difficult to find acceptable photographs from the web. I have replaced the photo I posted with another which illustrates more of my concerns with this president. (Yes, I know that other presidents have bowed, and that President Obama said that he believes in American exceptionalism, but none have diminished this by saying that citizens of every country also believe theirs is exceptional.) In this polarized political climate, I find I need to qualify much more of what I say as time goes on... Some tend to misunderstand me, and some overreact. Relax, people, I am a conservative, but I do try to remain open-minded.

*********************************************************

President Obama bowing remarkably low to Japanese Emperor Akihito (center) with Empress Michiko (right).
President Obama bowing remarkably low to Japanese Emperor Akihito (center) with Empress Michiko (right).

How can anyone admire President Obama’s foreign policy? I agree, he doesn’t control everything in the world, but the American president always had influence. Today, the Muslim Brotherhood runs Egypt, the Middle East is on fire with unrest, Iran is developing nuclear weapons, and North Korea threatens the Pacific with annihilation. His “soft voice,” as former Gov. John Sununu described it, tells the world’s fanatic leaders that they may do as they wish. Around the world, angry mobs attack our diplomats and citizens. As before, we still see images of our president being burned in effigy, so nothing has changed: his policies of making nice didn’t work.

The current president always said that if we raise taxes on the rich, it will make everything right. Yet, he holds concerts at the White House while the people’s house is closed to all Americans; no more tours allowed. Oh, and by the way, higher taxes still have not solved any problems.

The Obama doctrine didn’t work.
The Obama doctrine didn’t work.

President Obama’s policies can’t be more wrong. Lowering taxes broadens the base and grows the economy. How do I know? Reagan did it and it worked. Obama raised taxes, and just look at our stagnant economy. The president seems to like gun control. However, a man injured 14 people at Lone Star College today, in Houston, TX, with a razor-type knife. Following the president’s logic, should we then ban all razor-type knives? The perpetrator’s first name is Dylan. One of the perpetrators of the shootings at Columbine had the same first name. Should we raise suspicions for all people named Dylan? After, all we have to do something!

Obama recently admitted that his stimulus didn’t work by proposing a $4 billion incentive for businesses to help build infrastructure. Out of all his spending, has a bridge been built yet? Did you see any new roads? Where are all the new jobs? Where’s the Vice President’s report on what the stimulus bought us? Remember, he put the VP in charge.

Pointing a weapon horizontally is dangerous.
Pointing a weapon horizontally is dangerous.

Some of the president’s strategies seem a little deceptive to me. For example, the idea for sequestration came out of his cabinet, and he pushed the concept, thinking it wouldn’t happen. When sequestration came down the pike, he turned against it and he blamed it on the Republicans! This is a pattern, as Guy Benson points out at townhall.com: The president goes on the road, identifies a problem but doesn’t have a specific solution. Then he announces a vague slogan for the issue (raise taxes, equal rights for everyone). Next he returns to Washington and congratulates himself as the only person who has a real, common-sense solution. Next he blames Republicans for not figuring it out – and blames the House of Representatives (mostly Republican) for being obstructionist and opposing his murky solution.

Do I agree with President Obama on anything? Yes! He said that if we can do one thing to save the children from massacres in our schools we should do it. I agree. Arm the people who work there!

Gun Control – Which Argument Makes More Sense?

Written : Apr. 03, 2013

I’m now active on Twitter. Please follow me there at @markacohen

Murderers don’t obey laws.
Murderers don’t obey laws.

The Huffington Post article’s headline reads, “I Never Wanted to Take Your Guns Away,” and yet, the state of Colorado recently passed laws which restrict the gun magazine size to 15 rounds. They seek to reduce or ban the sales of guns. Boatloads of bills remain written but not yet passed, including those banning online classes and certifications via the Internet. Former astronaut Mark Kelly (husband of Gabby Giffords), said on FOX News Sunday on Mar. 31, 2013, “It's (background checks are) the most common-sense thing that we can do to prevent criminals and the mentally ill from having access to weapons.” To which version of common sense does Mr. Kelly refer?

The website, justfacts.com, which claims to be a resource for independent thinkers, states that since Chicago’s tough gun control laws passed in the early 1980’s, gun murders have increased by 40% in that city. Since Florida’s right-to-carry laws passed in the mid 1980’s, gun crime has decreased by 15%. After Texas passed right-to-carry, the homicide rate from guns dropped by 30%. Michigan’s rate also went down by only 4%, but this is 2% lower than the national average. Although he speaks of background checks, Mr. Kelly’s logic escapes me.

Criminals don’t care what the sign says.
Criminals don’t care what the sign says.

Former Rep. Giffords said, “We must do something.” But, shouldn’t we think first? This week’s Aurora, CO, Sentinel, contains an article by Brandon Johansson which reacts to some Colorado sheriffs who say they either can’t or won’t enforce the state’s new gun laws. His article divides the counties into rural and city. Even the sheriffs who say they will enforce the laws admit to the difficulty in doing so.

Criminals respect force, not rules.
Criminals respect force, not rules.

How should we determine if our neighbor is worthy of possessing a weapon that shoots bullets? How is psychological fitness judged and by whom? The Constitution of the United States says that the citizens may “keep and bear arms,” and that right, “shall not be infringed.” No, the fathers of our country did not foresee our violent, out-of-control society, laced with dare and bravado. Or, did they? Guns protect us from idiots who would kill us. Perhaps the founders realized it. If not, the facts stand behind them, regardless.
