Immigration Ideas

Written : June 29, 2010

In a fit of irony, the federal government is now suing one of its states, Arizona, for producing legislation which supports existing federal laws! Dick Morris, a former aide for President Clinton, says, “it is a desperate, last ditch attempt to rebuild [President Obama’s] sagging popularity with America’s Hispanic voters.”

On Greta Van Susteren’s show, “On the Record”, Darrell Steinberg (D-CA), a State Senator, said the Arizona law is crafted to implement the law in a decisive way. He went on to say that once [an Arizonan] is pulled over, “if they have my color (white) skin, they’re not going to be asked for their immigration papers. If they have brown skin they likely will, whether they’re a legal citizen, a legal resident, or an undocumented immigrant, and that’s not right.” The law, SB1070, does not raise the issue of race once, but Mr. Steinberg sure does.

If one is pulled over, that person is required to show a driver’s license. We keep those with us, don’t we? Don’t legal immigrants want to stop the illegals, too? Although we don’t want to harass or pursue Mexican-Americans and any legal immigrants, why not use some common sense here? Who are we mainly looking for, Caucasians? And, how is this divisive? People would only be asked for citizenship papers if and only if they commit or are suspected of committing a crime, and they would be asked for a license if they have ANY color skin. Legal immigrants and legal visitors, I would advise you to carry ID and/or papers with you, why not?

Dick Morris thinks that if we did three things, we could solve the immigration issue. One: Jail time for anyone who hires illegals. Two: Setup a biometric ID system. Three: Implement a fair guest-worker program. They’re a start, but I’m not sure those steps are enough. I think we also have to seal the border for a period of time first. Only then can we begin to make progress toward solving the problem. And, don’t worry so much about the Hispanic vote. Like the rest of us, trust they’ll also know who to vote for.

Let's Protect America

Written : June 22, 2010

On June 18, 2010, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) accused President Obama of saying, “If we secure the border, then you all won’t have any reason to support comprehensive immigration reform.” Here is a more complete version you probably have not seen on TV:

You be the judge!

Parts of Arizona have been declared off-limits to American citizens! From this article, one can see that Mexican cartels already control a small portion of our country. Some of you may think the land already belongs to Mexico, but it does not. I know some are in favor of looking the other way, but this is a serious issue.

Speaking of looking the other way, on June 21, 2010, U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said that illegals have the right to be paid fairly. See the utube video:

This is stunning - because it is already illegal to hire anyone in this country who is here illegally! On either side of the issue, we have yet another reason to make our votes count in November.

David Sirota, a progressive talk show host in the Denver area, spoke about Jane Norton, a candidate for the U.S. Senate in Colorado. He said her latest campaign ad reveals that Norton has a “storm-trooper mentality.” What do you think? :

In reality there’s nothing wrong with Jane Norton’s ad – and moreover, the ad is clear, realistic, and is not aggressive or pretentious. Why shouldn’t America protect itself from the promise of future terrorist attacks?

Properly Securing Aid to Gaza

Written : June 15, 2010

After thousands of years of persecution, the state of Israel was setup in 1947 to establish a country for Jews so they could be protected. Yet, after the holocaust in Europe, anti-Jewish sentiment still rages on (just get an earful of media darling Helen Thomas' remarks made on May 27). Israel has been attacked several times by its Arab neighbors, so it has to stay on its toes.

An Israeli blockade of Gaza began in 2007, after the residents elected a terrorist group, Hamas, for leadership. Why would a blockade of Gaza be necessary? Hamas is committed to the destruction of the state of Israel, so therefore, Israel must make sure no weapons are smuggled in with humanitarian aid (which is allowed).

What would you do if you were trying to send aid to the Gaza strip? Once I secured the boat, the supplies (food, etc.), I'd contact the Israeli government. The next step would be securing a legal agreement for the Israelis to inspect our ship at some point. After all, I wouldn't want my ship to be perceived as an enemy!

What happened when a flotilla of six ships purportedly carrying aid to Gaza approached Israel on May 31, 2010? One ship, the largest, resisted boarding with violence. Why? Isn't boarding a method of inspection? If this was only a humanitarian mission, why did the crew resist?

True Perfection

Written : June 8, 2010

Baseball fans and also those of you who are not fans can learn of baseball’s magnificence without watching a single play! On June 2, 2010, Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga was denied a perfect game by umpire Jim Joyce’s blown call. A perfect game in baseball occurs when a pitcher doesn’t allow a single walk or hit and when his team commits no errors. The pitcher faces the minimum 27 batters, three each in all nine innings.

Perfect games have been lost in late innings, but never to my knowledge on the last out. In addition, Joyce admitted he made a mistake on the close call, and it was ruled a hit with two outs in the ninth inning. Galarraga faced one more batter and retired him as well. How rare is a perfect game? Major League Baseball (MLB) began in the latter half of the nineteenth century, and in all that time there have only been twenty! However, I was lucky enough to have seen one in person (Jim Bunning, Phillies, 1964)!

The 28-year-old pitcher showed momentary disbelief, and that’s all. He hasn’t whined, begged, or sued. Galarraga brought out the lineup-card to the home plate umpire the next day, which happened to have been the very same Jim Joyce. They shook hands. Joyce has cried over the event and he’s apologized to Galarraga, and Armando has forgiven. I’ve been a fan for nearly fifty years, and I can’t remember a single time when an umpire has ever shed tears over a play – or admitted fault. Several days later, the commissioner of baseball, Bud Selig, considered overturning the umpire’s bad call, but it appears he won’t do it. In this case, I wish he would.

Although the game wasn’t perfect, Galarraga and Joyce were. These two fine people have conducted themselves with a level of class unseen in ages, in any public arena. It defines this event. We shouldn't expect perfection, even when things go our way (the replay reveals that the 27th batter was, in fact, out). When life throws you a curve, adjust and move on – but don’t complain. It’s a fine lesson for all, especially for children. A couple of good things are coming out of this for Armando Galarraga. His team bought him a new car, and some of his gear will end up in the Hall of Fame. He may not ever be inducted, but his name will never be forgotten!

Quid Pro Quo

Written : June 1, 2010

Someone in President George W. Bush’s administration called upon his father (the first President Bush) to promise Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX) a position in his administration if she dropped out of the gubernatorial race against Rick Perry! Illegal? Impeachable? Should an independent investigation have been called? Throw the bums out? This didn’t really happen, but I do have your attention…

However, it appears the Obama administration may have asked former President Bill Clinton to ask Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA) to drop out of his Senate race against incumbent Arlen Specter (D-PA) in exchange for a high-ranking cabinet position. What do you think now? Should a special prosecutor be called in? Should this be investigated? I’m not saying either way, I’m asking you.

Is there a pattern developing here? Recall Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s alleged selling of President Obama’s Senatorial seat and the suspicion which swirled around the current administration’s involvement in that scandal. It was rumored the president’s deputy chief of staff offered Andrew Romanoff an administration job if he dropped out of the Senate race against Michael Bennett in Colorado. The spokesman of the self-proclaimed “most transparent administration ever,” Robert Gibbs, has dodged the question about the alleged Sestak offer for months.

Regardless, it’s illegal and a felony to offer an appointed U.S. governmental job to anyone in exchange for anything of value. Google “18 U.S. code 600” or “18 U.S. code 200” or “18 U.S. code 210” for proof. To those who say these offers happen all the time, I urge you to be as lenient and as forgiving when a Republican administration is in power. C’mon, I know you can do it!
