Supreme Court Upholds Obama’s Unaffordable ObamaCare Act as a Huge Tax (Some Say it’s a Penalty)

Before ObamaCare passed everyone agreed that the American health care system required fixing. Both sides knew what they wanted to do. However, President Obama declared, “We won,” and excluded the Republicans from input on the Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid creation. No ideas allowed for inclusion by conservatives. Can anyone not understand why we oppose it? As you may recall, the Dems arm-twisted their own Senators and the bill passed by just five votes in a House of Representatives run by Democrats and by one in the Senate with an even larger Democratic majority.

Okay, President Obama’s (POTUS’) bill affords coverage to those who can’t afford it. Libs say the 4 best things about it are: 1. You are covered regardless of pre-existing conditions. 2. The mean old insurance companies can’t drop you when you get sick and 3. There’s no lifetime cap on coverage. 4. Kids can remain on their parents’ plan until they’re 26! Don’t these sound wonderful? I like all four, but who will pay for all this, and how would the insurance companies not go under from such an extreme new burden? How can prices possibly decrease when coverage increases by leaps and bounds? Don’t we need to ask the questions and figure it out - prior to Congress passing the bill? Then Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said that they had to first pass the bill before you (the American people) could see what’s in it. And she snickered when she said it. Doesn’t that make you even a little suspicious?

U.S. Supreme Court (SCOTUS) Supreme Justice John Roberts’ unpredictable decision to declare the massive Obamacare program constitutional surprised both sides. The right and the left believed he would help strike it down. Indeed, Roberts declared the Affordable Care Act’s unconstitutionality via the commerce clause but declared it legal as a tax. Despite this Supreme Court decree, Nancy Pelosi and other liberals still deny it’s a tax and say instead that it’s a penalty for the few, but as many as 4 million will pay the tax to ObamaCare’s massive IRS expansion. But we’re not fooled by the rhetoric.

Liberals rejoiced as conservatives wrung their hands, but wait a minute. The Republican base and the Tea Party feel rejuvenated. Just as Democrats urge that the discussion is over (again), the fight to cut unaffordable spending continues. Many termed Justice Roberts’ careful calculation brilliant. I don’t think he’s that clever, but I do believe it will help conservatives in the long run. Americans, for the most part, enjoy the freedom of thinking and deciding for ourselves and keeping government out of our lives. ObamaCare is so despised, mainly because of its extreme taxation power over inaction; not buying a health care policy. I hope that this alone will assist Governor Romney’s election to the presidency. Which new inactivity will the federal government decide to tax? Not donating to charity? Not attending a rally in support of the president? Not supporting a liberal cause?

Liberals needn’t be afraid, though. Once ObamaCare is watered down when President Romney grants all the states waivers (as hundreds of the president’s friends received), a more sensible and more affordable act will be passed which will benefit all of us while preserving our economy.

Grover Norquist, Part II

The spectacular appearance of Grover Norquist on Washington Journal on Dec. 5, 2010 is worth discussing some more. He said that President Obama’s so-called stimulus package cost $800 billion, which led to higher unemployment, lower growth, and made the economy worse. How can you disagree?

Host Pedro Echevarria said the New York Times recently listed how much extending the Bush Tax Cuts could cost - and what it might yield for the U.S. if not extended. Each household over $250K would get an extra $25K annually if continued, while if the cuts expire, the Government would receive about $60 billion in revenue. The NYT suggested the $60 billion could buy - for example - a tripling of federal funding for research, or universal pre-school for 3- and 4-year-olds, or a much bigger troop surge in Afghanistan, etc. Mr. Echevarria asked Grover Norquist to respond.

The founder of Americans for Tax Reform surprised me with a little more excitement. “I don’t care what greedy politicians [want to do with] your income!” He then said that the NYT and the federal government play God and they think we’re wasting our money on our families. Norquist argued that we could spend it better. “The whole idea of the Tea Party was: You know what, Washington, you can’t spend my money better than I can and second of all, it’s not your money!”

Mr. Norquist continued, “The King wants the peasant’s money and he thinks the peasants are wasting it… It’s not the King’s money, it’s the American peoples’ money. We don’t have peasants in this country: We are citizens. …The nerve of the New York Times to announce: ‘Let me walk through your house and take things out...’ It’s not their job!”

Grover Norquist concluded, “Where was the NYT when we spent $800 billion on the so-called stimulus package…?” He then used an analogy. Take a cup to a lake and fill it with water. Next, walk around to the other side of the lake and dump the water in the cup back into the lake. And the so-called stimulus did it 800 billion times. Norquist suggested that Keynesian economics says if you take $1 from someone and give it to someone else it stimulates the economy. Doesn’t it seem like a silly idea?

Grover Norquist, Part I

Did you catch Grover Norquist on Washington Journal on Dec. 5, 2010? Fortunately, I did. Mr. Norquist is the head of Americans for Tax Reform, and he was stellar on CSPAN!

According to Mr. Norquist, the Dems would like to make you believe they urgently want to extend the current tax rates for some but not for all. “Think about that,” he said. Democrats have had a majority in Congress for years (since 2006) and they’ve never even written a bill to extend the rates for anyone! “Not for poor people, not for middle-income people, for no one.” So, Mr. Norquist argued: President Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Sen. Harry Reid have gotten up every morning and never lifted a finger to extend these tax cuts. The concept that they have a burning desire to extend the lower rates for anyone is nonsense. They were hoping they could let the Bush cuts expire, but they were beaten in the last election.

He explains my position beautifully. Grover Norquist painted a verbal picture of the President standing in front of businesses with a sledgehammer. Since Norquist’s appearance on this program, the Congress and the President have compromised on an extension of the cuts for two years. But he was prepared for the circumstance. Mr. Norquist said that President Obama would say to businesses, “We’re not going to smash you in the face now, we’re going to smash you in the face in two years.”

Norquist maintains, “Do you think investors and businesses [are going to say] that’s great, we’re going to build a new factory because we’re protected for two years? And then you hit us in the side of the head? No. Temporary tax cuts don’t have the incentives…that people face.” He says that the President’s plan is to make the change temporary, and then cause them to expire after he gets re-elected.

Grover Norquist concluded that since the cuts are not permanent now, we have to replace President Obama “in two years with a president who respects that when people earn money, it belongs to them [and] not to some greedy politician....” Well put, man!

Health Care Questions

Of the new health care legislation, don’t we need to ask more questions? For some examples, please see these: Tell me why the new health care bill spends $800+ billion to save $100 billion? Perhaps I don’t understand, but the new bill doesn’t offer a very good ROI (return on investment), does it? Why are there twelve million uninsured individuals in this country? And, if that number is incorrect, why are there so many more uninsured? Why is the media saying Obama’s (Sen. Harry Reid’s) plan builds on the private insurance system when it really sets up a government-run system which, through lower prices, would naturally overpower the private system we have today? Rather than blindly trusting the politicians this time, why not drill down and ask questions? During the Bush administration most wouldn’t blindly accept what was going on, so why do it now?

First of all, we do need to think about this. I don’t have a good answer on the question of ROI, though: Can someone please let me in on the secret?

There are so many uninsured - partially because we have not improved the immigration system yet. Too many people come here from other countries without going through “the system”. We all know the current system is outdated and inefficient. It takes a very long time for an immigrant to legally become a citizen. Yet, one has to ask this question, too... Why have so many put up with the current antiquated system and have become citizens anyway? Why won’t a single Senator or Congressman put forth a simple plan to update it? Former Alabama Governor, Mike Huckabee has (see it at this URL: http://townhall.com/blog/g/d1703ab4-54ee-4e2b-835f-3f81311d2ee2), so, why not at least examine his ideas?

People are forced to purchase health insurance in their own state. Why not allow people to purchase it anywhere in the U.S.? It’s what “free enterprise” is about, right? People get health insurance through their employers. Shouldn’t there be other ways folks can band together to get lower rates? There are. Many are saying how this can be done. Why are the politicians not listening?

The media is telling us Nevada Senator Reid’s plan builds on the current system because they ignore the citizens who are critical of it. The fact is a public plan will eventually supplant the private system because its rates will be less expensive. We all know how price affects the purchasing habits of Americans. Just look at Walmart. Even though folks may fundamentally disagree with Walmart “taking over” the mom & pop shops in America, who deliberately buys from the more expensive, mom & pop stores and refuses to pay Big W’s lower prices?

When the Shoe’s on the Other Foot…

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) dared members of his committee Thursday to vote against the nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said a few days earlier that Sotomayor is “filibuster-proof” (a filibuster is a parliamentary tactic that allows unlimited debate) and that anyone who opposes her does so at his “own peril”. This is how the Democratic Party defines “tolerance” these days, where it’s either their way, or the highway. By the way, some Democrats DID stage a filibuster in the Senate to upset Judge Samuel Alito’s nomination to the Supreme Court in 2006, in case anyone’s forgotten.

When Judge John Roberts and Judge Alito had their hearings only a few short years ago, Reid and the Democrats begged for more time to look over their records. I remember that Reid then insisted it was imperative that they then have more time. The Republicans, in charge at the time, graciously granted as much time as Senator Harry Reid required. Now the shoe’s on the other foot. The Republicans have just asked for more time to go over Judge Sotomayor’s record. But instead of granting more time, the Democrats have submitted an aggressive nomination schedule without even consulting with the Republicans.

In response to the Republican request for more time, Sen. Pat Leahy (D-VT) open-mindedly said, “There is no reason to unduly delay consideration of this well-qualified nominee.” Keeping in mind that this is a party whose members often scream for “fairness”, can someone please explain to me (preferably on this blog) how that response was fair?
