An America I Don’t Recognize

Written : May 25, 2010

Since election day in 2008, I’ve heard things I thought I’d never hear. A foreign leader was invited to speak in front of the U.S. Congress this past week. He then insulted us by slamming the Arizona immigration law and more than half the Congress applauded… I read the law, and it doesn’t open the door to discrimination. Yet, the American president didn’t defend our country, instead he cowered to Felipe Calderon of Mexico and joined the criticism!

The Phoenix Suns, a prominent NBA basketball team, wore jerseys in at least one playoff game which said “Los Suns,” in opposition to the Arizona law sb1070, which has no civil rights implications whatsoever. First of all, the correct translation for “The Suns” is “Los Sols”, but I never thought a sports team would involve itself in a national, political debate. It disappointed me to hear our president referring to the team as “Los Suns.”

Your Vice President, Joe Biden, on May 24 said Washington, D.C. is not worthy of the title “The Capital of the Free World!” While speaking in Brussels, Belgium, he cited that city’s history and international institutions as reasons why it could well hold the title.

The U.S. Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, criticized BP for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Ask yourself this: How is this a national security issue? U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, repeated his shoe reference this week, "We will keep our boot on [BP’s] neck until the job gets done." Does it make you wonder why government officials place blame instead of working with BP to fix the problem?

What a Gusher!

Written : May 4, 2010

We all want the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico stopped, so, let’s solve this problem – together. Keep in mind the ongoing operation started as a rescue mission and about a hundred workers were saved. Over a thousand business and governmental people are now working to save the coastline. BP (British Petroleum), the company who leased the rig from Transocean, another oil company, had several plans to stop the huge leak. One was to create a large dome in which to collect the oil so it could be rerouted. Another was to drill another well nearby to relieve pressure. One more was to activate a 450-ton valve, a blowout preventer, which could shut off the well at the source. Exxon, Transocean, and Shell are also helping.

Before we jump all over the oil industry, let’s realize there are over fifty rigs in service now in the Gulf and the rigs employ about 35,000. Before we decry the search for oil, know there are over 4,000 rigs off all the coastlines of the U.S. Few spills have occurred, and we need more oil now, or at least until we can develop effective, alternative energy sources. In fact, we need enough oil to offset our dependence on the Middle East for the raw substance. The price of gas has to go down at the pump, not up.

I’m sure BP will be held wholly responsible at some point, yet Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, on Sunday said, “Our job is basically to keep the boot on the neck of British Petroleum.” If BP were suspected of terrorism, would we be quite as harsh? Such rhetoric in a time like this is not helpful. When it comes to the clean up, BP is on our side.
